So, I got this bug in my ear to try and remake the Small Prada Galleria Saffiano Leather Bag. It’s a real beauty, that bag. I saw it and thought, “I bet I could do something like that.” So that’s where this whole thing started.
First, I spent a good chunk of time just looking at pictures of the bag online. Gotta study your subject, you know? Zoomed in, checked out all the angles, tried to get a feel for the size and how it’s all put together. They call it “Saffiano” leather. Fancy name, but I just needed to figure out what kind of leather I could get my hands on that would look similar. It’s textured, but not too much, and it’s gotta be sturdy.
Then came the fun part – shopping for materials! I hit up a few local leather stores. Showed them pictures, asked about different types of leather, felt them up – you gotta get a feel for the leather, see if it’s got the right stiffness. I finally found something that I thought would work. Not exactly Saffiano, but close enough. And a heck of a lot cheaper, I’ll tell you that much.
Next, I had to figure out the pattern. Now, this was tricky. I drew and drew and drew, trying to get the shapes right. I even made a few mock-ups out of some cheap fabric I had lying around, just to test out the dimensions and how it would all fit together. Lots of measuring, cutting, and re-cutting. It was a mess for a while there, I’ll be honest.
Once I had a pattern I was happy with, I started cutting the leather. That was nerve-wracking! You only get one shot with leather, so you gotta be careful. Slow and steady, that’s the key. I used a rotary cutter and a metal ruler, made sure my lines were straight, and took deep breaths.
Stitching it up
- After the cutting came the stitching. I don’t have one of those fancy sewing machines, so I did it all by hand.
- Saddle stitch, they call it. Strong and looks pretty good, too. It’s time-consuming, but I kind of like it.
- It’s relaxing, in a way. Just you, the needle, and the thread. My fingers were sore, but I kept at it.
Slowly but surely, the bag started to take shape. Seeing it come together, piece by piece, that was really something. It wasn’t perfect, mind you. There were a few wonky seams, and I had to redo a couple of parts. But hey, that’s part of the process, right?
The hardware was another challenge. I managed to find some similar-looking buckles and rings online, but they weren’t exactly the same as the real Prada ones. Close enough for my purposes, though. Attaching them was a bit fiddly, but I got there in the end.
Finally, after many hours of work, I finished it! My very own homemade version of the Small Prada Galleria Saffiano Leather Bag. It’s not an exact replica, of course. But it’s got the same general shape, the same kind of look. And I made it with my own two hands, which is pretty darn cool if you ask me. I’m quite proud of it, to be honest. It’s a good feeling to create something like that, you know? And it’s a pretty good-looking bag, too, if I do say so myself!
