Okay, so I’ve been eyeing this Prada Galleria Saffiano Special Edition bag for a while now. You know, the small one. It’s just so darn classy and looks like it would last forever. I finally decided to bite the bullet and try to remake it myself. I mean, why not? I saw some people talk about how some other bags, like the Ralph Lauren Newbury and the Michael Kors Sutton, kinda look like the Galleria, so I figured I could maybe get that same vibe without, you know, spending a fortune.
First, I did some digging. I looked up pictures, read descriptions, anything I could find about this bag. I wanted to get a really good feel for the size, the shape, the details, everything. I also looked at pictures of the other bags that people said were similar. This gave me some ideas for how I could tweak things if I needed to.
Then, I started sketching. I’m not an artist or anything, but I just wanted to get the basic shape down on paper. I made notes about the dimensions, where the handles would go, where the zipper would be, all that stuff. And I started to think about what materials I’d need.
The real Galleria is made of Saffiano leather, which I learned is this special kind of textured leather. I didn’t think I could get my hands on the exact same thing, so I started looking for something similar. I went to a few different fabric and leather stores, just feeling different materials and trying to find something that had that same kind of textured look and sturdy feel. And I picked up some brown and red leather that was on clearance. I was so excited I could hardly wait to start sewing.
Next, I started working on the pattern. This was the hardest part, to be honest. I used my sketches as a guide, but I also had to figure out how all the pieces would fit together. I made a few test versions out of some cheap fabric I had lying around, just to make sure everything was the right size and shape. This took a lot of trial and error, let me tell you. I probably remade the pattern like five times before I was happy with it.
Once I had the pattern down, I started cutting out the leather. This was a little nerve-wracking because I didn’t want to mess up. I used a rotary cutter and a ruler to make sure all my lines were straight and clean. It was slow going, but I took my time and eventually had all the pieces cut out. Then, it was time to start sewing. I don’t have a fancy sewing machine or anything, just a basic one that I’ve had for years. But it gets the job done. I started with the smaller pieces, like the pockets and the lining. Then I moved on to the main body of the bag. This was the most exciting part because I could finally start to see it taking shape.
I added the hardware, which was actually pretty easy. I bought some gold-toned D-rings, buckles, and a zipper online. I just had to attach them to the leather using some pliers and a bit of elbow grease.
After many hours of work, I finally finished! It’s not exactly like the real Prada Galleria, but it definitely has that same kind of elegant, structured look. And it actually feels pretty sturdy, which is what I was going for. I’m really proud of how it turned out, especially since it was my first time making a bag like this.
